Singel stworzony został przez Rhetta Lawrence'a, Christinę Aguilerę i Matta Morrisa oraz wyprodukowany przez Lawrence'a. Pierwotnie piosenka miała znaleźć się na płycie Christiny 'Stripped' '02, ale z niewiadomych powodów Aguilera nie umieściła jej.
Są dwie wersje tej historii. Jedna mówi o tym, że początkowo piosenka miała być wykonywana przez girlsband Destiny's Child, jednak po odmowie nagrania piosenki przez zespół, Lawrence zaoferował zaśpiewanie "Miss Independent" Christinie Aguilerze. CHRISTINA AGUILERA has paid the ultimate compliment to AMERICAN IDOL winner KELLY CLARKSON - she loved the Texan's version of a hit song she co-wrote. Aguilera chose not to record MISS INDEPENDENT for her STRIPPED album, and Clarkson chose to make it her first single.
Aguilera admits she was annoyed when she first heard the song, because she wasn't asked permission for Clarkson to record it, but she went out of her way to meet up with the American Idol star at the GRAMMY AWARDS on Sunday - so she could tell her how much she liked her version of her song.

Kiedyś zwracałam uwagę na to jak zachowuje się piosenkarka, co robi w życiu prywatnym. Miała być dla mnie wzorem i ideałem. Teraz jest mi to obojętne. Najważniejsze jest to jaką tworzy muzykę. Po raz kolejny potwierdza się zasada: Nie ważne co mówią, ważne że mówią (czy jakoś inaczej to brzmiało) Skandal opłaca się, nie ważne, że przy tym jesteś najgorszą wyuzdaną szm..., ważne że masz sławę i pieniądze.
Wizerunek Lady Gaga niewątpliwie budzi kontrowersje. Nie wiem co bardziej jest charakterystyczne: jej zachowanie czy wygląd. Sama Gaga przyznała, że w stworzeniu jej własnego wizerunku pomogła jej Lady Starlight, a na swój sukces pracowała całe życie. Nic dziwnego, że teraz robi wszystko, aby być na ustach wszystkich.
Pomimo tego nie można odmówić Gadze ogromnego talentu muzycznego i wokalnego. Wielokrotnie udowodniła, że jest dobra wokalistką, śpiewając na żywo. Na początku kariery Gaga nie była traktowana poważnie. Wyśmiewano ją i zaliczano do grona kiczowatych gwiazd. Z czasem Gaga stała się bardzo szanowaną i uznawaną artystką.

Teledysk został potępiony przez Watykan za obrazę symboli religijnych.

Wizerunek Britney określili jako niepokojąca mieszanka niewinnej dziecinności z dorosłą seksualnością, tym samym wzywali do bojkotu sprzedaż płyty Britney.
